SOC (Scottish Ornithologists’ Club)

The SOC plays a central role in Scottish birdwatching, bringing together novice birdwatchers, seasoned birders and research ornithologists with the aim of studying and documenting Scottish birdlife.  With access to a wide range of records collected by members, some of which may not be known to SRSGs, the SOC can therefore assist in the provision of relevant raptor data to complete the picture, especially for commoner species.   The SOC will support and promote national surveys in Scotland and assist in their organisation if requested.  The SOC also has an important role in the dissemination of information about birds of prey (e.g. news about surveys, the results of surveys, summaries of population trends and issues) which it will develop through its journal ‘Scottish Birds’.  The SOC has recently produced ‘Birds of Scotland’, an extensive encyclopaedia of Scottish avifauna written by 150 experts which contains excellent sections on Scotland’s raptor species.
